We used to photocopy important documents and keep irreplaceable files in safes. We worried that a flood might wipe out our records or that we might lose a list of clients behind a cabinet. Now, though, technology creates new concerns, especially for small-business owners. If a hard drive fails or a colleague accidentally deletes a file, an entire business could be set back.

The Seagate BlackArmor WS 110 addresses both concerns. This desktop drive comes with a full suite of software to make backing up easy, and it can encrypt your most important records. At the time of this writing, the WS 110 cost $150 to $160 for 1TB of space (a 2TB model should be available soon), and it connects to your PC via either USB 2.0 or ultra-fast external Serial ATA (eSATA). It acts like a Swiss vault for your data, and while it costs a slight premium over competing drives of the same capacity and spin rate (and speed isn't its strong suit), it's worth the extra money if you need the security features.

The BlackArmor WS 110 has a slim profile for a desktop drive, measuring 1.3x7x7 inches. The front features Seagate’s nautilus-swirl logo, which glows blue when the drive is in use. The BlackArmor comes in one color—black—and its casing has a smooth, matte finish with gunmetal-gray trim around the sides. The drive has a distinctive swoosh shape, unlike Western Digital’s competing My Book Studio Edition II line. We liked that the WS 110 could stand either vertically, with the included plastic stand, or horizontally, with the attachable rubber feet. The WS 110—like Jason Bourne—blends into any environment. The drive is almost covert, an impression it enhances by operating in near-total silence.
